In Surgery

There are certain places where having the right people with you make all the difference.  Operating rooms, team sports (any sort of fight), weddings, cockpits, and photo shoots to name a few.

This week we visited the Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and photographed their new Hybrid Surgical Center.  It is a brand new operating room with technology and health care innovation from floor to ceiling.

The day had a strong collaborative feel, things ran smoothly, and we made some exciting images.  It was great to have the right people on set! (In the photo, Ellen, me, Jackie & Moria – in scrubs).

In Step

We recently finished a fun project focusing on women and shoes (graceful, movement, obsession etc.).  Our model was three for this look, (and we had to schedule the call time around her nap, great!).

Take a Hike!

I have been working recently on a project at Flat Rock Brook Nature Center in Englewood NJ.  A remake of the educational exhibit space at the Nature Center lead by a design firm Evidence Design.  The project is called "A Walk in the Woods" and is an indoor interpretation of all of Flat Rock Brook's ecosystems.  I've been spending long summer evenings on sunset hikes, on trail and in trees, discovering different parts of the FRB's 150 acres - forests, waterways, ponds and brooks.

Travelogue

Weeks of cold and rain ran into spring, delaying shoots and damping sprits. We reached a point where we couldn’t remember an ideal shooting day, (weather wise).  To long searching for a clear day and fighting the forecast. We managed to pick an afternoon to shoot a Cd cover with Singer/Songwriter, Evan Jerome, in his old neighborhood on the Upper West Side of NYC.  The day turned out and the take away was not to fight the weather so hard, there are usually options when the weather is less than ideal.  Can’t wait for the live show!

Steelmillstudio.com designed the artwork for the Cd Cover!

42nd Street

Had a fun week shooting on 42nd Street.  It's always interesting to see the calm of an early morning on a NYC Street and then see it come to life, and then feel the excitement of NYC at night.  First, we were on location at www.natsherman.com right at 5th Ave.

Next was a shoot down the block on the 46th Floor, amazing view.  We shot office space for www.starkbusinesssolutions.com  A great place to grow a company, have offices etc.

Expression

As a young photographer working in a studio in NYC, my friend Ron, a fashion stylist commented, “Any monkey can work a camera, to be a photographer you have to have a vision!”  So true, and this has kept me mindful of doing good work, but more so, beyond good work, offering a valuable expression – a goal, a creative commitment.

Throughout history master talents have expressed similar sentiments about their creative process - beyond the tactile hands on and know-how, having their creativity reach a place of emotion, feeling and the senses.

“Painting is a blind man's profession. He paints not what he sees, but what he feels...”
Pablo Picasso

“There are some people looking to play guitar, There’s other people looking for a sound.”
Keith Richards

I recently asked students to express how they felt with paint and pen during a portrait shoot – It added some interesting elements letting the students participate in the image being captured.  Their creativity helped shape the photograph, how they felt and who they were  became a part of what we created together.
